Dr. Rolland Menk

Dr. Menk teaches EDU5102 Integrating the Language Arts. He served as a teacher for 43 years—the first 18 years as teacher/administrator of Lutheran Elementary Schools in Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin and the last 25 years as a Professor of Education at Martin Luther College. He retired in 2005. Dr. Menk taught at all grade levels, kindergarten through eighth grade. His first teaching assignment was to a one-room school. At Martin Luther College he supervised student teachers, and for his last 13 years he taught children’s literature, a methods course in language arts, and a course in curriculum and instruction.

Dr. Menk is passionate about teaching writing and spelling and has shared his research and methods of teaching writing and spelling with his students and through workshops and presentations for WELS teachers across the country. His Handbook for Teaching Writing is a supplementary text for teaching language arts students at MLC. He is a past president of the Southwest Minnesota Reading Council.

He and his wife Eunice retired to Lake City, MN. They enjoy their ten grandchildren and spend much of their retirement attending activities at Great Plains Lutheran High School, Manitowoc Lutheran High School, First German Lutheran School Manitowoc, WI, and St. John’s Lutheran School Lewiston, MN.
