Reference and Research Services

Reference services provide patrons with help in finding library materials within the MLC library and from sources outside the library.

Reference Librarians help people...

We also...

• answer questions about the services and resources of the MLC library
• provide instruction on the research process and the use of the library
• refer people to information sources beyond the library
• Interlibrary loan of books and other material from other branch libraries in the same library system, or from a cooperating library anywhere in the world.

Library users are encouraged not to be shy about asking the reference librarian for help. Even though some librarians may appear busy working on a project, their primary duty when they are at the desk is to help library users find what they are looking for.

Tutoring Services

Martin Luther College provides a free tutoring service for all MLC students who are in need of help in any subject area. This service is provided by the Academic Success Center located on the upper floor of the library across from the library offices. The ASC is open during library hours.

How do I get started with a tutor?

1. Talk to your professor or advisor and let them know that you are interested in being tutored for their class.
2. Contact the ASC Director, Prof. Arlen Koestler at koestlal@mlc-wels.edu.  Provide your name, the course name, instructor and a little information about yourself and what you need. He will make the necessary contacts to connect you with just the right tutor.

Writing Tutors

Writing tutors are available in the Academic Success Center five nights a week. If you need help getting started, or have some structural issues, the writing tutors are there to help. They won't proof-read your paper but will make suggestions for improvement. No appointment is necessary.

Jobs at the Academic Success Center

Anyone interested in peer tutoring is welcomed to apply for a tutoring position at the Accademic Success Center. Applications are available by going to: Application, follow the included directions.

PPST & PRAXIS TESTS

Students in the Elementary and Secondary teacher tracks are required to take content knowledge exams for licensure. These exams are given twice a year on the MLC campus in fall and spring. Other locations and times for tests are available, contact the Education Office for more answers.  

Study Guides 

The ASC has several copies of PPST & PRAXIS study books on reserve at Circulation. Materials can be checked out for 21 days and renewed if more copies are available on the shelf.

MLC College also has access to an online practice system called the PLATO Learning Network. This program provides PPST simulated tests and tutorials. Access to this service is provided on the ASC computer. Contact Prof. Koestler at koestlal@mlc-wels.edu for an appointment and instructions for the PLATO system.

Community Resources

The New Ulm and surrounding area provide many services to the community.

The City of New Ulm website provides information about it's history, business, education, health and recreation services. 

Brown County is the county in which New Ulm is located. This website provides information about the history, elected officials, elections of 2008, county parks, employment and services.

New Ulm Medical Clinic website provides a telephone number, maps and information about services & policies, doctors, and patient & visitor information.

New Ulm Public Library "The New Ulm Public Library is a resource we share as a community. We welcome and support all people in their enjoyment of reading and pursuit of lifelong learning. Working together, we strive to provide equal access to information, ideas and knowledge through books, programs and other resources. We believe in the freedom to read, to learn, to discover."

New Ulm Civic Center website provides address, phone and reservation contact information. The building consists of a year-round regulation size ice sheet and an Olympic size ice sheet.  There is large space available for a banquet area and floor shows/expos when the Olympic size ice sheet is removed.

My Health Minnesota This site is sponsored by the University of Minnesota Health Sciences Libraries, the Mayo Clinic Libraries, and the MINITEX Library Information Network, in collaboration with the National Library of Medicine. Minnesota citizens can use Go Local to find more than 5,000 hospitals,nursing homes, physicians, support groups, pharmacists, libraries, rehabilitation programs, and other health services in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, plus reliable health information about a multitude of diseases and conditions from MedlinePlus. The database is searchable by location, diseases/health issues, and providers/facilities/health services.
