Journal Title Search

Library 2.0 is a process of incorporating new technology into library services. Of the many technologies that have emerged, the online full-text availability of books and journal articles has become an indispensable tool.

Through the purchase of several database products, the MLC Library has access to over 18,000 journal titles.  With that many titles, how can we possibly let our patrons know what titles we own? If we know the Journal Title, in what database is it available? How can a patron find the abstract, citation, or full-text article of a specific journal?

To help manage the quantity of our titles and keep information current and accurate, the MLC Library has subscribed to Serials Solutions, E-Journal Portal. This service, along with 360 Search and a list of available databases, can be found on the library website under Find/Journal Titles.

E-Journal Portal

E-Journal Portal allows our patrons full access to all our full-text journal titles. Users will find the straightforward interface and basic search functions easy to use. On the search page users have four options to find e-journal titles:

  1. Search by title or ISSN.
  2. Browse an A to Z alphabetical title list.
  3. Use the drop down menu to search 14 broad subject categories.  Each subject area is then expanded to include more specific subjects. E-Journal Portal provides journal titles relevant to the topic for the patron to browse.
  4. Link directly to a database by choosing from the database list. No need to return to the Library’s web page to find databases.

The Results page provides the searcher with information about each title including:

  1. Journal title
  2. ISSN number
  3. Date range of available articles.
  4. Provider name (database) that links you to the online journal website.
  5. Alternate title if there is one.

E-Journal Portal doesn’t stop at the results page. Choose your provider and link to the online journal website. The searcher can now choose the year, volume and issue to see the contents page. It is in this view that the user has access to the full-text article, abstract, or citation and options to print, e-mail, save as file, and more.

Technology is constantly changing and the ability to get needed resources is becoming faster and easier. Keeping up with the pace is challenging. The library staff hopes that this resource enhances the research process and provides our users with the latest up-to-date services.
