Internet Access for Windows XP

How to configure your Windows XP machine for Internet access in the dormitory.
Quick version for advanced users:
- Hook your computer up to the network jack.
- Set your computer to DHCP.
- Open your web browser.
- Follow the registration instructions given.
Detailed version for beginners:
- Connect your computer to the wall.
- You need a CAT5 cable for this step. This is not the same as a phone cable. If you don't have one, they are available for a modest fee from Network Services.
- Connect your CAT5 cable to the back of your computer and to the wall.
- Tell your computer to obtain information from our network.
- Click the
Start Menu. - Click
Control Panel. - Click
Network and Internet Connections. - Click
Network Connections. - Double-click
Local Area Connection. - Click the
Propertiesbutton. - Click on
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). You may have to scroll down to find it. - Click the
Propertiesbutton. - Click on
Obtain an IP address automatically. - Click on
Obtain DNS server address automatically. - Close out of this step (
OK, thenOK, thenClose).
- Click the
- Register your computer with our network.
- Open your web browser. This is often called "Internet Explorer."
- You will be presented with a series of pages asking you to register your computer. You will need your network username and password. Follow the instructions given.
