How do I connect my computer in the dormitory?

last modified 2006-07-21 02:47 PM

Dorm connections register your computer.

How do I connect to the Internet?

  • Set your computer to get an IP address and a DNS address automatically.
  • Plug your network cable into the network (RED) wall jack in your room.
  • Open your browser to any page. It will take you to a registration page instead.
  • Enter your Novell user name and password on the registration page.
  • Wait three minutes. Your computer will be registered and your wall jack will be connected to the Internet when you reopen your browser.

Is there a network jack for every computer?

  • Concord (men) has a jack for each person at the study desk and a third one on the outside wall.
  • Centennial (women) have some rooms which have a jack per person, but most rooms have a single jack on the end of the study desk.
  • Augustana has a single jack on one end of the study desk.
  • Summit has a single jack somewhere in the room.

What if there are more computers than jacks?

You will need to use a switch to connect multiple machines to the same jack. You may bring your own or purchase one at Network Services. The price of a D-Link DSS5+ switch is $23.54, tax included.
