How to reference MLC website addresses in print documents.
Save yourself time and energy by referencing MLC website address the right way. Follow these general guidelines to make sure that you print a correct and usable address.
- Consistency is important.
- Print addresses in short format:
www.mlc-wels.edu
or as a full URL:
http://www.mlc-wels.edu/
but do it the same throughout the document. - Beware of line-wrapping and auto-hyphenation.
- People are much more likely to make errors when typing an address if it wraps on to two lines. Do whatever possible to make an address fit on one line. Also, the "hyphenation" features in programs like Microsoft Word can destroy web addresess.
- Stay general.
- It's much safer to link to a general folder:
http://www.mlc-wels.edu/home/academics/
than to a specific file within that folder:
http://www.mlc-wels.edu/home/academics/resources/handbook-elem.pdf
A filename, like "handbook-elem.pdf", is likely to change. General folder names, like "/home/academics/", are not. - "Go" words.
- If an address is too long to use in a printed document, I can make "Go" words. This is similar to how WELS.net uses "Jumpwords". For example, Financial Aid wanted to reference its website:
http://www.mlc-wels.edu/home/administration/offices/finaid/
in printed documents. This is very long. To make it easier, we created a shortcut that automatically redirects the user to the full address:
http://www.mlc-wels.edu/go/finaid
