last modified 2013-02-05 05:11 PM

The principal is a position that comes to mind when we consider school leaders. However, school leaders include all people who guide, influence, and carry out the programs of a school, such as early childhood directors, athletic and music directors, and teachers. Read on to learn about support for school leadership that is either offered now or being planned.

Leadership Institute Modules
The Commission on Lutheran Schools is offering a series of 10 four-hour training sessions to principals, directors, and all teachers. The Leadership Institute Modules cover a variety of topics important to school leadership. Modules are arranged in districts by the district school coordinator (DSC). Contact your DSC to schedule a module in your area soon.

WELS National School Leadership Conference
Coordinated by the Commission on Lutheran Schools every few years, this conference provides leaders with an opportunity to worship, network, and consider important educational topics. Nationally recognized speakers and experienced WELS leaders share best practices and introduce new ideas. The last conference was in 2012. Look for the next conference in 2015.

Master of Science in Education – Leadership Emphasis
Martin Luther College blends leadership training and ministry support in this program designed specifically for the gospel ministry of WELS teachers. Nineteen principals, early childhood directors, and teachers have already completed their master’s degrees with the leadership emphasis through MLC, and 39 more are pursuing theirs. Some enrolled in the leadership emphasis are looking to augment their skills while others are preparing themselves for future service. Learn more about MLC's MS Ed program.

Coming Soon . . . Master of Science in Educational Administration
Martin Luther College and the Commission on Lutheran Schools are creating a principal-director preparation program aligned to newly created WELS principal standards and national leadership (ISLLC) standards. The program will result in a Master of Science in Educational Administration. This proposed ministry-focused program will be specifically designed to assist both current and future principals and directors to lead WELS schools and early childhood ministries.
