An open letter from President Mark Zarling to those considering Martin Luther College and the public ministry
People say college is a time to find yourself. I couldn’t agree more, especially if that college is MLC.
Here, a gracious Lord Christ comes to you daily and taps you on the heart through his powerful Word. Here we encourage you to ask the hard questions—about your future, your talents, your vocation, your relationships, even the hurts in your conscience—and then to hear God’s comforting answers. Here you can listen as the Word teaches you to know yourself as God your Father knows you:
. . . as his baptized child.
You who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
. . . as part of his family.
We were all baptized by one Spirit into one body.
. . . as a person uniquely gifted to serve.
There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
Martin Luther College is unique too—a single-purpose college owned and operated by WELS to prepare students for gospel ministry, whether in pre-seminary studies or in educational programs that include early childhood, elementary, and secondary education, as well as staff ministry.
Each of these ministries unleashes the power of God’s living and active Word . . . the Word that convicts people of their sin and also touches their hearts with the joy of forgiveness . . . the Word that screams God’s holy wrath against sin and also proclaims the shout of a victorious Savior: “It is finished!”
Knowing well the power of the Word, you might ask, “Me, Lord? Could you use me to bring that powerful Word to a congregation, a classroom, a living room?”
It’s a good question. And you may not know the answer until you come to MLC. Let’s listen to the Word together. Let’s talk as Christians heart to heart. And let’s pray to our Lord Jesus, “May your good Spirit lead me.”
