Baseball Picks up First Win at Northland
ASHLAND, Wis. - The MLC baseball team was finally able to stop its season long losing streak with a come-from-behind win at Northland by the score of 8-6.
The Knights trailed 5-4 heading into the ninth inning, but put together four runs on four hits in the inning. Joe Janke (Big Bend, Wis./WISCO) tied the game with RBI double that drove in Ryan Schmeling (Menomonie, Wis./SCLHS).
Tyler Morgan (New Ulm, Minn./MVL) doubled home Janke to put the Knights ahead, and was followed by RBI hits by Joel Hering (Rowlett, Texas/LPS) and Stephen Gurgel (Mequon, Wis./KMLHS) to push the lead to 8-5.
Janke got the start and went all nine innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on 12 hits to improve to 1-3 on the season. He struck out five and walked four in the game.
The Knights took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but lost it quickly when the Lumberjacks scored two in the bottom of the inning. After Northland scored once in the third, MLC tied the game again in the fifth at 3-3 before Northland took the lead again with a two-run sixth. The Knights cut the deficit to one at 5-4 with a one-run eighth inning, setting up the final inning comeback.
Janke led the Knights with three hits on the day, while Hering, Gurgel and Josh Schultz added two hits apiece.
With the win, MLC improved to 1-21 overall and 1-9 in conference action.
MLC will return to the field tomorrow (April 17), when they wrap up the weekend series at Northland with a double header.
