Central Tops Knights in Double Header
PELLA, Iowa - The MLC baseball team was unable to pick up its first win of the season in a double header at Central Monday afternoon, losing game one 11-2 and game two 7-5.
Central took a 6-0 lead into the sixth inning, and then put it away with five more in the sixth to win 11-2.
Hikaru Tomizawa (Saitama, Japan/LPS) got the start and went all six innings on the mound, allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits while striking out three as he dropped to 0-1 on the season.
Joel Hering (Rowlett, Texas, LPS) picked up the two RBI for the Knights with a single in the seventh inning that scored Joe Janke (Big Bend, Wis./WISCO) and Tyler Morgan (New Ulm, Minn./MVL).
Janke led the Knights with two hits in the game. The Knights finished with six total hits in game one.
MLC battled back from an early 4-1 deficit to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning at 4-4, but three runs by Central in the bottom half of the fifth proved to be the difference in a 7-5 MLC loss.
MLC matched Central with 11 hits for the game, but four errors on the defensive end led to five unearned runs for starter Ryan Schmeling (Menomonee, Wis./SCLHS), who picked up the loss. Schmeling allowed seven runs (two earned) in 4.1 innings of work.
Michael Haugly (Malone, Wis./WLA), Stephen Gurgel (Mequon, Wis./KMLHS), Stephen Apt (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) and Morgan each finished with two hits in the game, with Morgan, Gurgel, Haugly, Samuel Korth (Bay City, Mich./MLS) and Josh Schultz (Antioch, Ill./LPS) each driving home one run.
With the two losses, MLC dropped to 0-15 to start the season. The Knights will return to the diamond on Tuesday, April 5, when they host Bethany for one nine-inning game scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
