Knights Fall 6-5 to Vikings
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC baseball team held the lead for much of its Wednesday game against Bethany, but a three-run seventh inning by the Vikings pushed them to a 6-5 win over the Knights.
Stephen Gurgel (Mequon, Wis./KMLHS) had a big day at the plate for the Knights, driving in runs in the second and fourth inning to give MLC a 2-0 lead, and then hitting a two-run HR to right field in the sixth to push the Knights back on top by the score of 4-3 after the Vikings scored three in the fifth. For the game, Gurgel finished with two hits and one run to go with his for RBI.
Bryan Scriver (Kansasville, Wis./Shoreland) got the start for the Knights and went eight innings, allowing six runs (all earned) on six hits, but picked up the loss to drop to 0-4 on the season.
After the Vikings scored three in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead, the Knights cut the deficit to one when Tyler Morgan (New Ulm, Minn./MVL) singled home Greg Holzhueter (Mankato, Minn./MVL).
Trailing by one in the ninth, Morgan hit a deep fly ball into the wind that nearly tied the game, but a strong wind coming in from left field kept the ball in the park to close out the game.
With the loss, MLC dropped to 0-16 on the season and 0-4 in league play, while Bethany improved to 14-3 overall and 4-0 in the UMAC.
MLC will return to action on Friday, April 9, when it hosts St. Scholastica for the first of a three-game weekend set. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Mueller Park.
