Knights Finish Sweep at Northland
ASHLAND, Wis. - The MLC baseball team followed its first win of the season with two more wins at Northland Saturday, winning game one 9-2 and game two 9-1.
MLC scored seven runs in the second inning, and starting pitcher Bryan Scriver (Kansasville, Wis./Shoreland) made it hold up in a 9-2 win in game one.
Scriver went the distance to pick up his first win of the season, allowing two runs on 11 hits in seven innings, while striking out seven.
The Knights scored seven in the second on just three hits, and had the help of four Northland errors in the frame.
Josh Schultz (Antioch, Ill./LPS), Stephen Apt (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) and Brad Essig (Lewiston, Minn./Luther) had two hits apiece, while Joe Janke (Big Bend, Wis./WISCO) had three RBI.
MLC outhit Northland 12-6 in a 9-1 win in game two, finishing a sweep of the Lumberjacks.
Joe Blum (Bonduel, Wis./FVL) went all seven innings for the Knights, allowing just the one run and six hits, while striking out three, to improve to 1-5 on the season.
At the plate, nine of the ten players the Knights sent to the plate in the game had at least one hit, while Greg Holzhueter (Mankato, Minn./MVL), Tyler Morgan (New Ulm, Minn./MVL) and Janke each had two hits.
MLC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, and then added three more in the third to push the lead to 4-0. The Knights tacked on two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, and then one more insurance run in the seventh on the way to the win.
With the win, MLC improved to 3-21 overall and 3-9 in the UMAC, while Northland dropped to 4-17 on the year and 3-9 in conference play.
MLC will return to action on Monday, April 19, when it hosts Waldorf for a 1 p.m. double header at Mueller Park.
