Knigths Lose Two at Luther

DECORAH, Iowa - The MLC baseball team dropped a pair of games at Luther College by the scores of 15-0 and 13-1 Wednesday in its final tune-up before the conference season begins.

Luther took control of the game from the beginning of game one, scoring six runs in the first and five more in the second on its way to a 15-0 win.

MLC starting pitcher Mike Haugly (Malone, Wis./WLA) made his first appearance of the season and allowed 11 runs (five earned) on seven hits while walking five in two innings of work. Christian Marquardt (Racine, Wis./Shoreland) finished the final four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out three.

At the plate, were only able to muster two hits for the game, with Tyler Morgan (New Ulm, Minn./MVL) and Joel Hering (Rowlett, Texas/LPS) each picking up singles in the game.


Game two was more of the same for the Knights, as Luther scored three runs in the second innings and eight more in the third in a 13-1 MLC loss.

Ryan Schmeling (Menomonie Falls, Wis./SCLHS) was the Knights' starter and allowed 11 runs (nine earned) on ten hits in 2.1 innings of work to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Schmeling retired the first three batters of the game in order before Luther exploded for 11 runs in the next two innings. Nathaniel Brenner (Mequon, Wis./LPS) came in relief and pitched the final 3.2 innings, allownig two runs.

MLC scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Stephen Gurgel (Mequon, Wis./KMLHS) that scored Morgan from second base.

MLC finished with four hits for the game, led by Tyler Briney (Stevensville, Mich./MLHS) with two.

With the two losses, MLC dropped to 0-10 on the season. The Knights will return to action tomorrow (Thursday, April 1) when they host Presentation for the first double header of UMAC play this season. Game one is scheduled to start at Mueller Park at 12 p.m.
