Greg Holzhueter Scores 1,000th Point in MLC Loss
DULUTH, Minn. - MLC senior guard Greg Holzhueter passed the 1,000 point mark for his career at St. Scholastica Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the Saints beat the Knights by a score of 79-69.
Holzhueter came into the game with 987 career points, and scored a team-high 17 points to become the eighth player in school history to score 1,000 for his career. Holzhueter also dished out ten assists.
The first half was back-and-forth, with the Saints getting the advantage heading into the break with a 15-5 run that allowed them to take a 40-31 lead after 20 minutes.
CSS pushed its lead as big as 14 points in the second half, but the Knights hung around by taking care of the ball, and forcing St. Scholastica turnovers. For the game, MLC committed 11 turnovers, while the Saints turned it over 18 times.
MLC cut the deficit to four points with 2:19 remaining, but the Knights were held without a field goal down the stretch as the Saints put the game away.
Galen Holzhueter and Justin Eternick joined Greg Holzhueter in double figures with 14 points apiece for the Knights, who shot 41.9 percent from the field for the game. CSS shot 55.3 percent from the floor, and 47.1 percent from beyond the three-point arc.
With the loss, MLC fell to 0-11 overall, and 0-3 in the UMAC, while St. Scholastica improved to 4-9 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.
The Knights will return to action on Friday, January 21, when they host Presentation for a 7:30 contest.
