Knights Drop Opener to Dubuque
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC men's basketball team dropped it's opener by the score of 85-56 Monday night to the University of Dubuque.
The Knights struggled offensively early in the game and trailed 9-0 before freshman Nathan Bauer (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside) scored on a jumper to put the Knights on the board.
Dubuque kept the Knights at bay for the entire first half, unable to put them away but still keeping a distance of at least seven points throughout before taking a 38-28 lead into the break.
The Knights seized the early momentum in the second half, starting the period on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to two points at 40-38. Greg Holzhueter (Mankato, Minn./MVL) led the charge with three steals that led to MLC baskets, and added two points and three assists during the run.
Dubuque would pick up their level of play from there, however, and after the Knights cut another deficit to five points at 54-49 near the 11 minute mark of the game, the Spartans finished the game on a 31-7 run, with Josh Bellaire and David Kushnir leading the way with 22 and 18 points respectively.
For the Knights, Holzhueter finished the game with a team-high 15 points, seven assists and five steals, while Jared Matthies (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside) joined him in double figures with ten points. Bauer added nine for MLC.
MLC will return to action Saturday, Nov. 21, when they travel to UW-Superior for a 3 p.m. tip.[BOX SCORE]
