Knights Overcome Slow Start in Win
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC men's basketball team fell behind 10-0 and 15-2 in the early moments of Saturday's game against Presentation, but rebounded to win by the score of 69-59.
The Knights trailed by 13 points at 15-2 just over six minutes into the game, but slowly made their way back with strong defense and some timely scoring. Midway through the half, MLC switched to a zone defense, which pushed the Saints out of their comfort zone and allowed the Knights' offense to come around.
After MLC trailed by two at the half at 32-30, the Knights came out firing to open the second half, starting the stanza with an 11-2 run to give them the lead.
Presentation was never able to recover from the slow second half start, as the Knights led the rest of the way. The Saints were able to tie the score with just under ten minutes to play, but MLC responded with by running off seven unanswered points to take control of the game for good.
Nathan Bauer (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside) and Greg Holzhueter (Mankato, Minn./MVL) paced the Knights with 19 points apiece, with Bauer scoring 11 of his points in the first half, while Holzhueter picked up the pace in the second half with 12.
The Knights also received strong contributions from their big men, as Ryan Kolander (Brookfield, Wis./WISCO) and Derick Rosenbaum (Phoenix, Ariz./MLS) each finished with eight points and combined for 15 rebounds.
With the win, MLC improved to 7-14 overall and 4-8 in league play, while Presentation dropped to 11-12 on the year and 7-5 in the UMAC.
MLC will return to action on Friday, February 19, when they host Northland for a 5:30 p.m. game.[BOX SCORE]
