Men Lose Opener at Viterbo
LA CROSSE, Wis. - The MLC men's basketball team opened its season with a 65-53 loss to Viterbo in the first day of the Viterbo University Invitational Tournament Friday night.
The Knights struggled from the field, showing the rustiness that often comes in the first game of a season by shooting 31 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from beyond the three-point line.
They hung around for much of the game with the help of a strong performance on the glass, as MLC outrebounded the V-Hawks 39-34 overall, and finished with 15 offensive rebounds.
MLC started the game strong, taking an early 8-7 lead, but Viterbo took command of the game with a 10-0 run, and built a nine-point lead at halftime.
The Knights cut the deficit to five at 33-28 early in the second half after a Galen Holzhueter jump shot, but they weren't able to get any closer, as Viterbo began to create some separation with a 12-2 run, and would eventually build a lead as big as 21 points to help put the Knights away.
Justin Eternick and Luke Rothe finished as the top two scorers for MLC with 11 points apiece. Holzhueter had eight points and seven rebounds, while Josh Danell grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go with five points.
MLC will now play in the consolation game at the tournament against Waldorf College, which starts at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, November 17).
