MLC Men Lose Home Opener to Dakota State
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC men's basketball team lost its home opener to Dakota State by the score of 72-59 Saturday.
The Knights kept within striking distance for much of the first half, but the Trojans had a great close to the half with six points in the final 30 seconds to bump a four-point lead into a 34-24 edge at the break.
MLC clawed to within four at 42-38 at the 14:19 mark and kept the deficit within single digits for much of the half, but was never able to get closer than four the rest of the way, as the Trojans 53.8 percent from the field to hold off the Knights down the stretch.
Defense and rebounding helped MLC stay in the game, as the Knights forced 21 DSU turnovers and outrebounded the Trojans 41-37 overall (including a 21-6 edge on the offensive glass).
Luke Ruthe finished the game as the high scorer for MLC with a career-best 21 points on 8-16 shooting. Galen Holzhueter added 13 points, and Josh Danell played a strong game inside against the bigger Trojans with eight points and a team-high ten rebounds.
MLC dropped to 0-4 on the season with the loss, while Dakota State improved to 7-1 with the win.
MLC will return to action on Monday, December 3, when it travels to Waldorf College. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
