North Central Tops MLC Men
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC men's basketball team was unable to slow down the explosive North Central offense in an 86-81 loss Friday night.
The Knights started fast, taking a 6-3 lead in the opening three minutes, but the Rams would respond with a 14-2 run to take a nine-point lead. The Knights kept the lead in single digits for much of the half, but the Rams finished with a three-point play in the final seconds of the half to take a 44-34 lead into the break.
NCU was able to build on its halftime lead early in the second half, leading by as many as 17 points at 64-47 with 13:38 to play in the game.
MLC hung around by dominating the rebounding battle, scoring 16 second chance points off 11 offensive rebounds in the half to help cut the deficit to three at 84-81 in the final ten seconds before NCU guard Nathan Roeder made two free throws with seven seconds to play to put the game away.
Galen Holzhueter finished with a team-high 24 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds for the Knights, while point guard Kaleb Buch added 20 points and nine rebounds. Justin Eternick and Josh Danell joined them in double figures with 11 and ten points, respectively.
MLC dropped to 4-18 on the season and 3-8 in UMAC play with the loss, while North Central improved to 13-8 overall and 8-3 in league play with the win.
The Knights will return to action on Saturday, February 9, when they host Northwestern in a game scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
