Ground Game Leads MLC to Win at MacMurray
JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - The MLC football team used a dominant ground game to defeat MacMurray 30-27 Saturday.
First-year running back Matthew Olson carried the load for much of the day, rushing for 206 yards on 38 carries. Luke Rothe had 20 rushes for 61 yards.
For the game, MLC rushed for 283 yards on 69 carries. The Knights struggled throwing the ball, as Rothe finished 8-25 passing for 148 yards, one touchdown, and five interceptions. Olson caught the lone touchdown pass, and finished with four grabs for 54 yards.
The Knights took a 14-0 lead, scoring once on a Rothe three-yard rush at the end of the second quarter, and then again on a 38-yard pass from Rothe to Olson at the beginning of the third quarter.
After MacMurray scored on an 89-yard interception return to cut the MLC lead to 14-7, Tyler Dorn scored his first of two second half touchdowns to push the lead to 22-7.
MacMurray scored twice in the to cut the MLC lead to 22-20, but Dorn's second touchdown would be enough insurance for the Knights to finish off the win.
MLC outgained MacMurray 431-297 in the game, with the defense holding MacMurray to 97 yards rushing. Derek Loewen led the team with eight tackles, while Galen Holzhueter added six tackles and one interception.
With the win, MLC improved to 3-6 overall and 1-6 in the UMAC.
The Knights will finish the regular season next Saturday (November 3) when they host Crown for a 1 p.m. game.
