Saints Power Past Knights 5-1
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC soccer team kept the game close for a while against conference-defending champion St. Scholastica, but ultimately lost 5-1 to the Saints at Knight Field Friday night.
MLC fell behind early, as CSS star Toby Peter scored the first of two goals in the fifth minute of play to put the Saints up 1-0, and then added his second goal in the 31st minute to put MLC in a 2-0 deficit.
The Knights responded, though, when Nathan Gurgel put home a loss pass from Kaleb Buch in the 38th minute of the first half to cut the deficit to one at 2-1 heading into halftime.
CSS would prove to be too much for the Knights to control in the second half, scoring three goals in the half to push the lead to the final margin. For the game, the Saints outshot MLC 38-4 overall, and 16-2 on goal.
Goalkeeper Benjamin Zietlow stopped 11 shots for MLC on the day, while Buch led the team with two total shots, to go along with his assist.
MLC dropped to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the UMAC with the loss, while CSS improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.
MLC will return to action tomorrow (September 18), when it plays Northland. The game is scheduled to start around 2 p.m.
