Babinec Breaks Scoring Record in Win at Northland
ASHLAND, Wis. - MLC senior Erica Babinec broke the all-time scoring record at MLC in a 72-48 win at Northland Saturday.
Babinec, who entered the game 13 points shy of the school record of 1,551 points held by her sister Emma, broke the record with 14 of her 24 points in the first half, and scored the record-breaking basket in the final minute before the break.
MLC dominated play throughout, jumping out to an 8-1 lead to start the game and never trailing at any point in the game.
The Knights built a 31-18 halftime lead, and quickly built the lead beyond 20 points at the start of the second half, cruising the rest of the way for the 24-point win.
MLC dominated the game defensively, forcing 19 Northland turnovers and holding the Lumberjills to 38.9 percent shooting from the field. In the first half, Northland had nearly as many turnovers (12) as field goal attempts (13).
Babinec led the Knights with her 24 points, and also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds on the way to collecting her third consecutive double-double.
Alex Anthon joined Babinec in double figures with 15 points on 5-7 shooting from the field, while Anthon and Brittney Gossen combined to dish out 11 assists to help the Knights shoot 47.5 percent from the field for the game.
With the win, MLC improved to 16-7 overall and 10-2 in the UMAC, while Northland dropped to 11-12 on the season and 6-6 in league play.
The Knights will return to action on Friday, February 17, when they travel to Crown for a game scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
