Fast Start Not Enough in Loss at UMM
MORRIS, Minn. - The MLC women's basketball team jumped out to a 13-2 lead but were unable to hold it in a 77-70 loss at Minnesota-Morris Friday night.
The Knights held the Cougars to just two points for nearly six minutes of play in the first half, but UMM came back to cut the MLC lead to one-point at 34-33 at halftime.
The Cougars were able to wear down the Knights up front in the second half, building a quick lead and holding off every MLC charge down the stretch to hang onto the win.
Erica Babinec led MLC with a game-high 26 points on 13-17 shooting, and also grabbed 12 rebounds. Sarah Free added 12 points, while Emily Boldt had a career-high eight assists.
The MLC defense held the Cougars' offense down for much of the game, as UMM shot 44.4 percent from the field and 5-24 from beyond the three-point arc. The Cougars were able to get to the foul line often, however, outscoring the Knights 16-3 from the charity stripe.
With the loss, MLC dropped to 6-12 on the season and 4-5 in the UMAC, while the Cougars improved to 14-6 on the season and 9-0 in league action.
MLC will return to action tomorrow (February 5), when it travels to Presentation for a double header of women's and men's basketball beginning at 3 p.m.
