Saturday's WBB Game at UMM Named UMAC Game of the Week
ST. PAUL - The women's basketball game this Saturday between MLC and Minnesota-Morris has been named this week's "UMAC Game of the Week."
MLC enters this weekend’s match-up looking even the season series after the Cougars came away with a 60-59 win in New Ulm in the first meeting between the two programs on January 25. The Cougars led for much of the game, but a thrilling final four minutes that featured eight lead changes ultimately ended with a pair of free throws from Emily Mehr with five seconds to play to give UMM the win.
The first match-up was a defensive struggle, no surprise considering the teams are the top two in the conference in points allowed and field goal percentage allowed during conference play. The Knights shot 36.3 percent from the field and held UMM to 33.3 percent for the game, but the Cougars finished with one more three-point field goal and two more free throw to secure the win.
The Knights' defense held UMM to 6-24 shooting from beyond the three-point arc, and also limited the conference’s leading scorer (Mehr) to 11 points in the first meeting. Junior forward Rebecca Engelbrecht drew the assignment of slowing down Mehr in game one, and could be asked to do that again, while MLC guards Alex Anthon, Brittney Gossen, and Hannah Hackbarth will need to continue to contest the Cougars’ three-point shooters in the hopes of limiting them again from behind the arc.
