Women Fall at Northwestern
ST. PAUL - The MLC women's basketball team dropped to 1-1 in UMAC play with a 61-51 loss at Northwestern Friday night.
Defense was the story for Northwestern early in the game, building an 11-point lead at the half by holding the Knights to 37.5 percent shooting and 22 points in the first 20 minutes.
The Knights battled back in the second half, turning up the defensive pressure to force 12 turnovers after the break to help cut the deficit as low as six on several occasions, but they just weren't able to make enough shots, shooting 29.3 percent from the field in the second stanza on the way to the ten-point loss.
Leah Nass led MLC in scoring with 12 points off the bench. Hannah Hackbarth and Rebecca Engelbrecht each had ten points, while Brittney Gossen led the team with nine rebounds and added four assists.
The Knights dropped to 3-10 on the season and 1-1 in the UMAC with the loss, while NWC improved to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in league play with the win.
MLC will return to action on Saturday, January 12, when it travels to North Central for a 3 p.m. game.
