STORM LAKE, Iowa - The MLC women's basketball team dropped its first game of the season Tuesday night at Buena Vista by the score of 93-62.

Women Lose Opener at Buena Vista

Emily Boldt and the Knights dropped their season opener at Buena Vista

The Knights were led in scoring by Sarah Free (Plover, Wis./LPS) with 21 points on 6-11 shooting from the field and 8-9 shooting from the line, while backcourt mate Erica Babinec (Onalaska, Wis./Luther) added an all-around effort with 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Emily Boldt (Mukwonago, Wis./LPS) provided a presence down low with eight points, nine rebounds and three blocks despite playing just 20 minutes due to foul trouble.

MLC fell behind 7-2 in the opening moments before a 10-1 spurt pushed them into a four-point lead at the 12 minute mark, but Buena Vista would take control from there, scoring 16 of the next 17 points to take a double digit lead that they would keep around that length until a Carrie Fritzler (Deford, Mich./MLS) jumper in the final seconds of the first half cut the MLC deficit to eight points at 35-27 going into the half.

The Knights tried to cut the deficit early in the second half, but were unable to get closer than seven as inefficient play on both ends of the floor, as well as foul trouble to both Babinec and Boldt, allowed Buena Vista to push its lead to 20 eight minutes into the second half on the way to cruising to the 31-point win.

Buena Vista was led by Margo Muhlbauer, who scored a game-high 29 points. The Beavers put three other scorers in double figures, led by Jahde Hammer's 14 points.

MLC will return to action on Thursday, November 19, when they play their home opener against UW-River Falls. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
