Knights Lose Halftime Lead to Saints
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC women's soccer team had St. Scholastica on the ropes, but was unable to hold on in a 2-1 loss to the Saints Friday afternoon.
The Saints, the six-time repeating UMAC champions, were kept at bay for the entire first half, and trailed 1-0 at the break after a Bethany Schultz scored on a free kick from outside the box in the 44th minute of action.
CSS responded quickly to start the half, however, tying the game at 1-1 in the 47th minute on a goal from Taylor Cunningham, and then put the go-ahead goal on the board in the game's 70th minute to get the final margin.
The Saints outshot the Knights 38-7 overall, and 17-4 on goal, but MLC did a sound job of keeping CSS from getting good scoring chances for much of the game, and goalkeeper Allison Snyder cleaned up most of the Saints' shots, saving 15 on the day.
Schultz led the Knights with three total shots, while Hannah Mattek added two, including on goal.
With the loss, MLC dropped to 1-3 overall, and 0-1 in the UMAC, while St. Scholastica improved to 2-4 overall, and 2-0 in league play.
MLC will return to action tomorrow (September 18), when it plays Northland. The game is scheduled to start around 12 p.m.
