MLC Women Finish Season Sweep of BLC
NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team completed a two-game weekend sweep of Bethany Lutheran with a 6-3 win on a windy Saturday afternoon at Knight Field.
Playing with a steady wind in the first half, the Knights scored five times on the way to a commanding 5-2 lead heading into halftime.
Bethany Schultz and Jenna Maurer each scored twice in the half, while Lauren Maertz scored once to give MLC the big lead.
The Knights would shut down any potential comeback from the Vikings early in the second half, as Alyssa Maertz scored her first of the season to give the Knights all the cushion they would need.
Maurer's two goals improved her team-leading total to 12 this season, while Schultz's goals gave her 11 on the year. Schultz also added an assist in the game, giving her 99 career points, the third most in school history. The goal from Lauren Maertz in the first half was her third of the season.
MLC finished with 23 shots in the game while holding BLC to ten. Keely Keese stopped six of the nine shots she faced in goal to earn the win.
MLC improved to 8-4 on the season and 6-2 in the UMAC with the win, while BLC dropped to 3-7-3 overall and 2-4-2 in league play in defeat.
The Knights will return to action on Friday, October 16, when they travel to Crown for a 1 p.m. contest.
