Women Lose Conference Opener to NWC
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC women's soccer team lost the opener of the UMAC season to Northwestern by the score of 4-0 Friday at Knight Field.
The Eagles struck early, scoring first in the sixth minute and again in the 20th minute to take a 2-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Knights had several scoring opportunities, but the Eagles were able to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 61st minute, and then tacked on the last goal in the final minute of play finish off the Knights.
MLC was outshot 24-15 in the game, including a 12-10 edge for NWC in shots on goal.
Lauren Maertz led MLC with three shots on goal, while goalkeepers Keely Keese and Katelyn Malley each had four saves and allowed two goals.
With the loss, MLC dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the UMAC, while the Eagles improved to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
MLC will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, September 15) when it hosts North Central at Knight Field in a game starting at 12 p.m.
