MLC Swept in Home Opener
NEW ULM, Minn. - The softball team dropped both games of a double header against Wartburg Tuesday by the scores of 7-5 and 5-1, spoiling the first home games of the season for the Knights.
MLC was unable to overcome a six-run fifth inning by Wartburg in a 7-5 loss in game one.
Sarah Free (Plover, Wis.) allowed just one hit and one unearned through four innings, but Wartburg put together six runs on seven singles off her in the fifth to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
The MLC bats came to life in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs with the help of RBI singles by Karla Opperman (North Branch, Mich./North Branch) and Katie Kretsch (New Ulm, Minn./MVL).
The Knights made a final push in the bottom of the seventh with an April Cook (Menomonee Falls, Wis./KMLHS) single that drove in two runs, but Wartburg would slam the door to keep the Knights' rally going.
Free went all seven innings and picked up the loss, dropping to 2-2 on the season.
Wartburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth on its way to taking game two by a score of 5-1.
The Knights were held to four hits for the game, with both Free and Amanda Fogle (Oakdale, Minn./SCLHS) finishing with two hits apiece. The two combined for the Knights' lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when Fogle singled home Free, who had left off the inning with a double.
Heather Korb (Indianapolis, Ind./Lutheran HS) got the start and picked up the loss on the mound, dropping to 2-3 on the season. She allowed nine hits and five runs (two earned) in seven innings while striking out two and walking none.
With the losses, MLC dropped to 5-6 on the season , while Wartburg improved to 10-8.
MLC will return to action on Tuesday, April 6, when it hosts North Central for a double header starting at 3 p.m.
