Softball Drops Two at Cornell
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Martin Luther College softball team lost both games of a double header at Cornell by the scores of 10-1 and 11-3 Sunday afternoon.
Cornell jumped on top of the Knights with five runs in the bottom of the first inning on the way to a 10-1 win in five innings.
Kathryn Marquardt started the game on the mound for MLC and fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing all ten runs (eight earned) on ten hits and seven walks in four innings.
Andrea Biedenbender accounted for the MLC offense, smashing a solo home run to left field with one out in the second inning. MacCartney Mendolla had the second of the Knights' two hits in the game.
The Knights were unable to even up the two-game series in an 11-3 game two defeat.
Kelli Doell pitched the first 4.0 innings for MLC and fell to 2-1 on the season with the loss, allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits.
MLC scored all three of its runs in the top half of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 7-3, but were unable to get any closer as Cornell scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.
With the two losses, MLC fell to 5-4 on the season, while Cornell improved to 10-5 with the two wins.
The Knights are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday, April 1, when they host Bethany Lutheran for a double header scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
