Softball Splits Double Header Against UNW
NEW ULM, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team split a double header against Northwestern Thursday, losing game one 6-1 before winning game two 5-3.
Northwestern outhit the Knights 13-6 on the way to a 6-1 game one win.
The Eagles scored four times in the third inning to take the lead, and then added a pair of insurance runs later in the game to put the Knights away.
MLC scored its lone run in the second inning when Kelli Doell singled home Sara Willems, who reached base earlier in the inning with a double.
Kathryn Marquardt pitched all seven innings for the Knights and took the loss, falling to 5-6 on the season. She allowed all six runs (two earned) while striking out one.
The Knights built a four-run lead and held off a late UNW rally to win game two 5-3.
Willems put the Knights on the board in the second with an RBI single to score Andrea Biedenbender, and then the Knights took advantage of a Northwestern error to score three more runs in the fourth. Caity Seastrand, Maggie Schultz and Emily Waldek each had run-scoring singles in the inning.
The Knights scored a fifth run in the sixth inning, and then had to hold off the Vikings as they loaded the bases with no outs against MLC starter Kelli Doell in the top of the seventh, but Marquardt came in to get the final three outs and earn her first save of the season.
Doell pitched the first six-plus innings for the Knights, allowing three runs on ten hits while striking out four to improved to 5-5 on the season.
MLC moved to 11-12 overall and 5-8 in the UMAC with the split, while UNW is now 11-16 on the season and 7-5 in league play.
The Knights are scheduled to return to action tomorrow (Friday, April 18) when they host North Central for a double header. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
