Softball Sweeps Triple Header
PLYMOUTH, Minn. - The Martin Luther College softball team swept a triple header against North Central, Crown and Maranatha at the Plymouth Creek Dome to finish 5-0 at the tournament hosted by North Central.
The Knights jumped out to an early 7-0 lead and held off a late NCU rally to win game one 11-9.
MLC finished the game with 13 hits, as eight of the nine players in the line-up finished with at least one hit. Emily Waldek led the team with three hits at the plate, and also earned her first win of the season on the mound with a complete game.
Andrea Biedenbender, Emily Wessel and Caitlin Seastrand each finished with two hits, with Wessel also scoring a team-best three runs in the game.
After winning a slugfest against NCU in game one, the Knights shut Crown out in game two by the score of 5-0.
Starting pitcher Kathryn Marquardt allowed only one hit and one walk on her way to the shutout, retiring 14 consecutive Storm hitters at one point in the game. She improved her record to 2-0 with the win.
The Knights scored all five of their runs in the fifth inning, with Andrea Biedenbender, Wessel and Sara Willems each collecting RBI hits in the inning.
MLC closed the tournament with a 14-2 win over Maranatha in five innings.
MacCartney Mendolla led a host of strong hitting performances with a pair of home runs, including a three-run blast in the second inning to help the Knights build the early lead.
Kelli Doell would make good use of the run support, pitching all five innings and allowing just the two runs on six hits to improve to 2-0 on the season.
MLC improved to 5-0 on the season with the win, and is scheduled to return to action on Saturday, March 29, when it faces Loras at 1 p.m. in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
