Softball Tops Cougars to Advance to Title Game
MORRIS, Minn. - The MLC softball team defeated Minnesota-Morris 9-5 in an elimination game Saturday morning in the UMAC Conference Tournament to advance to the Championship Game this afternoon against Bethany Lutheran.
MLC jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an Amber Krause sacrifice fly that scored Emily Waldek, who led off the game with a double.
The Cougars tied it up at 1-1 in the second inning, but the Knights created distance in third with five runs. The Knights had four hits in the inning, and also took advantage of three UMM errors. Andrea Biedenbender hit a two-run triple to score a pair of runs, while Sara Willems hit an RBI double to plate another in the inning.
UMM scored twice in the fourth inning off MLC starter Kathryn Marquardt to cut the MLC lead to four to 6-3, but the Knights added one insurance run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to hold off the Cougars down the stretch.
Marquardt went the distance to improve to 10-6 on the season, allowing five runs (all earned) on 11 hits.
Waldek led the offensive effort for the Knights with four hits (including three doubles) and three runs scored.
MLC improved to 21-14 on the season with the win, and will now face Bethany Lutheran in the Championship Game. The Knights will need to defeat BLC twice to win the championship, because the Vikings won Friday night's game 4-1 and have yet to lose so far in the double elimination tournament.
