Two Softball Players Named Honorable Mention

ST. PAUL, Minn. - MLC softball players Sarah Free (Plover, Wis./LPS) and Karla Opperman (North Branch, Mich./North Branch HS) were named Honorable Mention All-UMAC Monday by the conference coaches for their play for the Knights.

Free played second base and pitched for MLC this season, hitting .357 from the lead-off spot during the conference season. In conference play, Free finished with 25 hits, 16 runs, 11 RBI, two stolen bases and one home run, while posting an on-base percentage of .410. Free also was one of the most difficult players in the country to strike out, recording just three strike outs in 117 at bats, good for 38th in the country. She also finished the conference season with a team-high three wins, and posted a team-best .986 fielding percentage.

Opperman led the Knights in conference play with a .369 batting average, .414 on-base percentage, .585 slugging percentage, and tied for the team lead with three home runs. Opperman also finished with 24 hits, 14 RBI and ten runs scored.

Both players also helped the Knights defensively to lead the nation in double plays recorded per game, finishing with an average of 0.53 turned double plays per game.
