Volleyball Clinches UMAC Tournament Berth with Win
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC volleyball team clinched a top four finish in the UMAC a spot in the postseason conference tournament with a 3-0 win over Bethany Lutheran by the scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-14.
The win over the Vikings clinched a spot in the conference tournament for the fourth time in the last five years for MLC, which still has a chance to finish second, third or fourth in the conference depending on this weekend's results.
Neither team was sharp to start the match, with BLC hitting -.273 in the first set, and MLC hitting .174 and .073 in the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead.
MLC turned it on in the final set, hitting .375 with the help of eight kills in that set alone by Rebecca Engelbrecht to finish the win.
Engelbrecht led the way with a match-high 18 kills and hit .500 for the match. Leah Nass also contributed with seven kills and added four blocks.
Miranda Maasz finished with 35 assists and two blocks, while Alex Anthon led the back row with 15 digs. MacCartney Mendolla also had a strong all around performance, finishing with 11 digs and four service aces.
MLC improved to 14-11 on the season and 8-4 in the UMAC with the win, while BLC dropped to 5-21 overall and 4-8 in league play in the loss.
The Knights will return to action on Friday, October 26, when they travel to St. Scholastica for a match scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
