Volleyball Loses in Five at UMM

MORRIS, Minn. - The MLC volleyball team won the first two sets, but was unable to hold off Minnesota Morris in a 3-2 loss by the scores of 26-28, 31-33, 25-20, 27-25 and 15-13.

Miranda Maasz set new career highs for assists (62) and digs (19) in a loss to UMM

The Knights won the first two sets in marathon fashion, outlasting the Cougars 28-26 and 33-31 to take a 2-0 lead.

UMM came back to win the next two sets, winning the third set 25-20 and overcoming a match point from MLC at 25-24 to win that set 27-25.

MLC jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the fifth set, and later held a 10-5 lead in the game, but the Cougars roared back to score ten of the final 13 points to win the set and the match.

Rebecca Engelbrecht had a huge game for the Knights, finishing with a match-high 32 kills. Rachel Hein was also a force on the attack for MLC, finishing with 17 kills.

Setter Miranda Maasz was fantastic as well for MLC, setting new career highs in assists (62) and digs (19). She also added three kills and three blocks. Her 62 assists tied the school record for most assists in one match.

In the front row, both teams had success with the block. MLC finished with 15 on the night, led by Rachel Larson's nine. UMM finished with 12.

With the loss, MLC dropped to 12-11 on the season and 6-4 in the UMAC. UMM improved to 18-7 overall and 7-3 in league play with the win.

MLC will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, October 20) when it travels to Crown for a match scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
