Volleyball Season Ends with Semifinal Loss at UMM
MORRIS, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team saw its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss at Minnesota Morris in the semifinal round of the UMAC Postseason Tournament Wednesday night.
The Knights played the Cougars tough in all three sets and had chances to win all three late, but lost by the scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-21.
MLC came back from an early first set deficit to tie the score at 19-19, but the Cougars closed strong to take a 1-0 lead.
The second set was much like the first, with the two teams tied 20-20 with a chance to win, but UMM continued to make the key plays to build its lead to 2-0.
In the third set, the Knights once again had opportunities with the score tied 18-18, but UMM was able to close the set and the match with one last rally.,p>MLC was unable to hold down the Cougar hitters for much of the match, as UMM hit .273 and finished with 48 kills in the match. MLC countered with 33 kills and a .140 attack percentage.
Rebecca Engelbrecht was held to eight kills by the tough UMM defense, but received help from middle hitters Morgan Kumbier and Heather Danell, who finished with seven kills apiece.
Miranda Maasz led all players with 26 assists, while Alex Anthon led the Knights with 15 digs.
The Knights finished the season 17-12, while UMM improved to 23-11 on the year and advanced the UMAC Tournament Championship Game Saturday.
