Volleyball Sweeps Crown to start Conference Play

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team started the conference season with a 3-0 win over Crown College by the scores of 25-12, 25-11 and 25-17.

The Knights broke open the first set after starting with a 14-11 lead, scoring 11 of the final 12 points, and continued to roll the rest of the way for the sweep.

Setter Miranda Maasz finished with 31 assists, helping MLC hit .342 for the match. Heather Danell finished with eight kills and a team-best four blocks, with Rebecca Engelbrecht also adding eight kills in two sets. Maasz also finished with six service aces and seven digs in the match.

Defense was also a major factor for MLC, as the Knights finished with seven blocks against 17 Crown kills, holding the Storm to an attack percentage of -.013 for the match. Alex Anthon led the back row players with ten digs.

MLC improved to 7-6 overall and 1-0 in the UMAC with the win, while Crown dropped to 0-14 on the season and 0-1 in conference action with the loss.

The Knights will return to the court tomorrow (Saturday, September 21) when they travel to Minnesota Morris for a match scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The match is this week's UMAC Game of the Week.
