Volleyball Sweeps CSS
DULUTH, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team swept St. Scholastica 3-0 Saturday by the scores of 25-23, 25-23 and 25-15.
The Knights came away with the first set after a back-and-forth between the two teams throughout, and then came from behind in the second, scoring the final seven points to overcome a 23-18 deficit and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. The Knights used the momentum gained from that second set win to roll through the third set to earn the sweep.
Rebecca Engelbrecht had a big day, finishing with 20 kills to lead all players in the match. Sara Willems also had a very strong performance with eight kills, and Engelbrecht and Willems combined to finish six of the seven points to end the second set.
Miranda Maasz had another strong, finishing with 38 assists, four kills and five digs. Kayla Schoeneck led the team with a match-high 16 digs, while Alex Anthon added 15 digs.
MLC improved to 10-8 on the season and 4-2 in league play with the win, while CSS dropped to 6-9 overall and 3-3 in the UMAC with the loss.
MLC will close out the first half of the conference season on Wednesday, October 9, when it hosts Bethany Lutheran for a match scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
