Volleyball Wins Two to Open Season
NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Martin Luther College volleyball team won a pair of games at the St. Olaf tournament Friday night to open the season, defeating Macalester 3-2 and Waldorf 3-0.
MLC started the season with a come from behind win against Macalester, winning in five sets after dropping the first two (22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 27-25, 15-10).
After dropping the first two sets, the Knights roared back to win the next two to force a fifth game, and then finished with a 9-1 run in the final game to win the match after trailing 9-6 to start the fifth set.
Rebecca Engelbrecht led MLC with 22 kills and 19 digs, and also tied for a team-best with five blocks. Miranda Maasz finished with 50 assists, while Heather Danell and Leah Nass added 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
The Knights followed their comeback win in the first match with a 3-0 win over Waldorf by the final scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-22.
MLC led big early in the first set before holding off a late comeback by Waldorf to win 25-23. After a strong second set win, the Knights closed the match by taking the final set 25-22.
Engelbrecht once again led the way in kills (nine) and digs (13), while Danell (eight kills) and Kayla Schoeneck (six kills) also added to the offense. Maasz finished with 24 assists.
MLC will return to the court tomorrow (Saturday, August 31) when it faces St. Olaf at 10 a.m.
