Volleyball Wins UMAC Opener over UMM
NEW ULM, Minn. - The MLC volleyball team won its conference opener Friday night, beating Minnesota, Morris 3-0 by the scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-17.
Besides being the first conference match of the season, the Knights were also playing in their first home game of the season. The crowd was ready from the start to push the Knights to victory, and was loud throughout in support of the team.
The Knights jumped out early, hitting .242 in the first set and getting five kills from Rachel Hein as they took a 1-0 lead after winning the set 25-19.
The match took an unfortunate turn in the second game, when an injury to a UMM player put the game on hold for nearly half an hour with the Knights ahead 10-9.
After the game resumed, the two teams went back and forth until the Knights rallied to win the game 25-22 and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was more like the first, with the Knights hitting .250 in the set and also blocking four Cougars attacks. Rebecca Engelbrecht had four kills in the third set, and Rachel Larson and Heather Danell joined Hein with two blocks to finish off the Cougars.
Engelbrecht led the Knights with 14 kills and hit .400 for the match, while Miranda Maasz had 28 assists. Hein, Larson and Nass each finished with five blocks.
With the win, MLC improved to 7-7 on the season moved to 1-0 in the UMAC. UMM dropped to 8-5 overall and 0-1 in league play.
MLC will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, September 22) when it hosts Crown College in a match scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
