The Art Print Collection, consists of framed art prints, and sculptures that are displayed throughout the library. |

| Most of the prints are on display throughout the library. Visitors are encouraged to browse the various pieces of art, displayed in the library. Included are portraits of past presidents, of the former WELS colleges, Dr. Martin Luther College and Northwestern College of Watertown, Wisconsin, and original art from local, and visiting artists, sculptures, as well as the MLC art print collection. | ||||||||||||

Children's Rare Literature |

The Children's Rare Literature Collection, centers around religious, children's books, published in the late 19th and early 20th century. |

| The library holds hundreds of rare children's literature books. Some of these came from Northwestern College,which during the 19th century had a teacher education program.Others came from the collections of Dr. Martin Luther College. Others were gifts to the college. The core of the collection centers on religious children's books published by German-American Lutheran publishers, the bulk of those published by the Northwestern Publishing House. Most of these books were published during the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. |

Papers, documents, and music from the library of the late Dr. Heinrich Fleischer. |

The MLC Library was privileged to receive many papers, documents, and music, from the library of the late Dr. Heinrich Fleischer. Access to these items is available by permission from the library director. Dr. Fleischer taught at the University of Minnesota and several of the former DMLC music faculty had the opportunity to study under him. |

The Martin Luther College Library received this 5/8 scale model of the Gutenberg Press from its builder, Art Paquay in 2006.

| Johannes Gutenberg, a German goldsmith, invented the printing press, with replaceable type in 1436. The famous, Gutenberg Bible was published in September 1452, and was the first book to be published in volume. | ||||||||||||
| Gutenberg's press lowered the cost of books enough to make them available to the masses, and is probably the impetus of lending libraries. The Gutenberg Press remained the standard until the early 20th century. This scale, model press, was built by Art Paquay, a New Ulm native, and assisted by Linus Guggisberg, making the screw and nut, with Kevin Schafer, providing printing cut and information. | ||||||||||||

A music collection of over 1,200 vinyl records of classical music. |

| Prof. em. Herbert Jaster served as a faulty member both at Martin Luther Academy in New Ulm, MN and Martin Luther Preparatory School in Prairie du Chien, WI. At his retirement in the early 1990's he donated his LP (long playing) classical music collection to the library at Martin Luther Preparatory School. In 1995 the majority of the collection (over 1200 LP's) was moved to the Martin Luther College Library to benefit the college students. This collection is searchable and available for checkout by special request. | ||||||||||||

Since 1989 the student organists at DMLC/MLC have used the Hymn Prelude Index, to find an appropriate organ prelude, or postludes, based on the hymn tune of an assigned hymn.

With the advances of computers and internet access it is time to update this database and make it available to the public. If you are familiar with this index you will notice a few changes. Only hymns from Christian Worship and Christian Worship Supplement are listed in the Hymn Number section. We will continue to include new hymn tunes and titles as they are added to the MLC Library music collection. |

The Ott Papers, are research papers written by pastor track students, from the former Northwestern College, Watertown, Wisconsin, and Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minnesota, in the areas of English or History.

| John H. Ott, was professor of English, at Northwestern College, Watertown, Wisconsin, from 1885-1943. Prof. Ott was a member of the NWC board since 1908. He attended Amherst College, and the universities of Oxford, Halle and Berlin, studying philology and history. In 1892 he received the degree of doctor of philosophy. Returning to the United States, he again assumed the chair of English and History at Northwestern College. | ||||||||||||

| The library maintains a rare book collection. The collection ranges from classics texts of the 1500’s, to children’s books published by the Northwestern Publishing House, in its earliest days. Information about some of the rare book holdings is accessible through the library’s online catalog. However, a large portion of these materials still need to be cataloged. Permission to view items in the collection may be obtained from the college librarian. | ||||||||||||
