- Lesson Planning for the Busy Teacher - Benjamin Bain
-
Are you a busy teacher? Do you wonder how you can get everything done? If you are the average WELS teacher, you have a heavy workload. In this sectional, I intend to share information I have gathered from other teachers that help increase efficiency in lesson planning.
About Benjamin Bain:I am married to an awesome woman, Tricia, and we have four children: Grace (8), Mahreah (6), Ruby (4), and Jonah (2). My entire ministry has been as principal and upper-grade teacher at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran School of Red Wing, MN. For a few years, I also served as the director of the Senior Choir.
In 1998, I graduated from the STEP program at Martin Luther College. My additional major was choral music. Since that time, I have earned my Wisconsin teaching license, and I am currently finishing up a masters degree in instruction through MLC. In addition, I have learned from the seven student teachers with which I have been privileged to work.

No knowledge of the Smartboard will be assumed, but beginning users will also learn new techniques to enhance their teaching. Notebook 10.0 will be used.

Has taught mathematics for 44 years, and uses the Smartboard in all of his classes. This past summer he presented 5 workshops on using the Smartboard. Considers his assistant, I. M. A. Smartboard, an invaluable tool for instruction.
- Teaching Outside the Box - Dominic Jacobs
-
Have you noticed how "canned" curriculums have become? The lessons are all scripted and planned in such a way that almost anyone could teach the concepts. Unfortunately, you are teaching students who do not learn the prescribed concepts in the exact same way. You task is to reach all students by teaching the material in a variety of ways. This sectional will challenge your way of thinking about your students and classes. Take home some ideas to implement change in your class on Monday morning.
About Dominic Jacobs:After graduating from Dr. Martin Luther College in 1995, I spent 12 years teaching students in grades 4-8. I was a principal for 2 years and athletic director for 11yrs. I received my Master's Degree from the University of St. Mary's in 2002. It was this program, which led me to discover a new way of teaching people, students and adults. Since that time I have worked to create a community environment within the classroom and school. I have done personal research on leadership and teambuilding, which I have used to develop in-service programs for schools. In the last year, I have used the same principles of learning and teambuilding concepts as a human resources manager to build a community and team in a local ophthalmology practice.
- Teaching Art - Jason Jaspersen
-
In my sectional I plan to talk with art teachers about the following topics:
- What we do in the MVL art department.
- A focus on developing skills in our students.
- Suggested sources for projects.
- Suggested reading.
About Jason Jaspersen:I have been the art teacher at Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School since 2001. I attended Bethany Lutheran College and Minnesota State University and Gustavus Adolphus College to study studio art. The Lord has blessed me with a moderately successful career as a professional artist. The boundaries between the work in my personal studio at home and the work I do with my students gets blurred so that both can benefit from one another. I live in New Ulm with my wife and two children.
- Teaching Hymnology: An approach to a necessity! - Steve Biedenbender
- About Steve Biedenbender:
I graduated from DMLC in 1987 and have taken graduate level courses at Carthage in Kenosha, the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater, and MLC. I began teaching grades 3-4 in Sturgeon Bay, WI. In 1997 I accepted a call to Luther Prep to teach music classes, direct two choruses, and run the piano program. Here I am one of two 7-8th grade teachers, direct junior choir, and do some occasional coaching.
I have played piano since I was four, been a church organist since 4th grade, participated in church choirs since 8th grade, and directed various choirs since 1987. I really enjoy doing things that increase the intensity of church song and promoting the use of solid songs of faith.

- FollowJesus and others follow you! - Mark Zarling
-
Be imitators of God... You are the salt...you are the light...you became imitators...you became a model...set them an example... Scripture redounds with the beauty of the gospel reality that Jesus lives in the lives of his believers. Indeed, Jesus actually says, I in them. The workshop will allow reflection and interaction on the key Biblical themes introduced in the Friday keynote, "Follow Jesus and others follow you!" Make Barnabas your middle name, and encourage each other that gospel ministry is so much more than what we do. It is who we are in Christ.
About Mark Zarling:Previously, I was a parish pastor in Danube, Minnesota and in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. I served as professor of Christian Education and Old Testament at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary for 11 years before moving to New Ulm in July of 2007. My wife, Colette, is a DMLC graduate who has 12 years of teaching experience. She was assigned to Garden Homes Lutheran in Milwaukee and taught there four years until the Lord moved us to Minnesota following my graduation from the seminary. For the last eight years of my ministry at Mequon, Colette was called to teach at Siloah Lutheran, in Milwaukee.
